A Report from Bethel – December 2018

“Zoey is Bethel’s miracle girl! When she arrived in Beijing last spring she was so small, could barely walk, couldn’t speak and was very serious. Quickly she started gracing us with her beautiful smile and she has flowered into a smiley, giggly little girl! She not only walks, but also jumps and runs! After just a month at Bethel she started saying “mama” and from there her language has just been exploding! Zoey giggles every time we give her a kiss, so each time she spoke we rewarded her with kisses so she started repeating all the words she heard to get more kisses. For a while, every time she heard my voice she would just start blowing kisses and saying my name to tell me she wanted me to come play with her. She has started speaking spontaneously, for example she tells her teachers that they are walking too slowly on their walk, and she can count to 10! She now explores her class room independently to find her favorite toys and has been doing very well in her orientation and mobility classes.

*See in the video her singing songs in English, speaking, learning how to say and blowing kisses on her walk and her learning to saw Apple Juice in English!*

Zoey just turned 5 years old and is blind. Overcoming all of the challenges she faced in the first 4 years of life could not have been easy for her, but she always did so with a big smile on her face. Whenever I have a tough day, I go across the hall to spend time with Zoey and she always creates a silly game for the two of us to play that brightens my day. Her favorite game by far is when I teach her a new song in English and surprise her with kisses.

Zoey impresses me constantly with her resiliency, strength and willingness to face the world with a smile and I would love more than anything to see Zoey spending her birthday next year with her family.” – Bethel

“She just turned 5  (same day as her file release!) She came to us in really bad shape, but honestly her progress is a miracle.
She’s so sweet, has the best smile and cutest laugh. She LOVES kisses and can sing lots of songs in English.

Besides being blind she has no other medical issues. She’s able to jump, walk well and even run a little! Her language is exploding and recently she’s been speaking spontaneously rather than just echoing.” – Bethel
