Jerry Has a Family!

Posted on Mar 15, 2014 by in I Have a Family |

8 year old Jerry is such an amazing kid. Those who know him well are in love with this little guy.
Jerry was born in November 2006, and he has been at Bethel since he was 18 months old.

Here is a first hand experience of his personality from a volunteer:
He is rather quiet, not shy just can entertain himself. One thing that is apparent is that he is determined. We had a balloon animal day and I was trying to help him get the balloon on the nozzle and he wouldn’t have me…he was going to sit there until he got it and guess what he did. Jerry is also calm and seriously, smiles all the time. I love this kid and I don’t know why he hasn’t found a family. I honestly, forgot he was blind most of the time. He is also super kind with the other kids. So, I would say motivated, independent and def a happy kid. I could see him adjusting well in a family with or without kids. He gets along with other children but again can do his own thing for hours.” – Caitlyn

“Jerry is a sweet boy! He is totally blind. He loves to play with all toys and is very social with his friends. He especially enjoys playing and running around outside, snack time, and getting presents. He wasn’t able to walk and he was extremely shy.Jerry has great motor skills, and can put on his own clothes, wash his face, and eat on his own. He is very intelligent and does well in school. He is very independent and whenever we want to film a child doing self-help skills, we always ask Jerry if we can film him because he is so independent and confident. He walks very well with his cane and he can go to the shops on his own and buy things (with an adult following to make sure he is ok-he is only 6 years old after all!) Jerry ran in the Beijing (mini) marathon in October 2013 and he often goes to the park to run 3-5km.

He is a good listener and plays well with others, though sometimes he can be a bit mischievous. Though he is very good at his studies, he often gets nervous before a test. He really likes going to school and he now studies at the Beijing School for the Blind where he learns how to use the cane, read and write in Braille and studies all of the normal school subjects. He is very clever and picks up new concepts quickly.” – Bethel

Jerry’s video introduction by Bethel

“We see life transformation and inspiring stories from our kids every single day. Jerry is a 7 year old boy who lives in an apartment in Beijing next to his school. He, along with his brothers walk to school every day, and when they get home they have to do chores and homework. He loves going into the community and he is learning more and more skills for independent living.
It is hard to imagine that at 18 months old, this little boy could not stand, walk or eat solids. With therapy and education, he quickly caught up. At just 7 years old, he is very independent, can read and write in braille and he loves school. He also has the cutest smile and you can tell that he is proud of his achievements.

Jerry is an amazing boy and we hope you enjoy this video! ”

“It has been amazing to see Jerry’s transformation at Bethel.”

Here is a wonderful ebook about adopting a child with a visual impairment. Great stories from families who have done this!
