Martin’s arrival: Martin, born March 2008, was found when he was approximately 4 months old. After searching for his birth family without success, officials took him to the orphanage where he still lives. His initial physical examination noted his face and lips were blue and he cried all the time. Doctors quickly knew he had congenital heart disease (CHD).

Development and Personality: Although he came into care in a very poor physical state, with the care of his nannies and the orphanage medical staff, he gradually became stable. At the age of 2, Martin could call “mama,” could stand while holding onto the bed railing, but could not yet walk. He enjoyed music very much! When the music would play, he would become happy and clap his hands! By 4 years old, he was able to walk unassisted. He knew all the names of his friends understood simple words, and liked to play with blocks. Nannies noticed he needed some extra help in some aspects of his development, so at age 5 he started attending a special class to help with language and development. By 7 years old, Martin could sing songs, communicate with others, and is said to be sensible and obedient. He often helps his caretakers fold clothes and his self-care abilities are strong.

Martin’s official diagnosis:  is congenital heart disease. Tricuspid atresia, ASD and mitral regurgitation are mentioned in his file. His CHD is said to be very complicated and they are unable to perform the operation he needs there in China. His file contains lab results as well as an ultrasound report and a report written by the American volunteer doctor who visited in April 2016.

When WACAP staff and volunteers visited in April 2016, Martin smiled easily and waved as he entered the room. He was visibly extremely cyanotic.

Cyanotic =is the appearance of a blue or purple coloration of the skin or mucous membranes due to the tissues near the skin surface having low oxygen saturation.

When staff started blowing bubbles, he smiled and grabbed for them. He followed directions and answered simple questions appropriately. He stacked cups, played with the shape sorter as well as the building blocks. Caregivers noted he is usually a shy boy who does not talk to strangers. He is not active and does not play a lot as his heart condition leaves him very tired.
